2102 mosaic classes with helen bodycomb

Helen Bodycomb is one of Australia's leading Mosaic Artists and teachers of this ancient medium. Recently returned from a 3 month study trip to Europe (assisted by an In-Habit International Research grant,) Helen spent valuable studio time with mentors Mosaic Maestros Giulio Candussio and Carolina Zanelli Spilimbergo (Italy) and exhibited work in Ravenna Mosaico the second major Ravenna Contemporary International Mosaic Festival (her work attracting a special mention from Robert Conway Morris in his review for The New York Times "An Ancient Craft Gets a Bigger World Stage".)

Join Helen Bodycomb in 2012 for some serious up-skilling and studio fun at her Lot 19, Castlemaine studio. For the first time, not only 2 days of tutored workshop with Helen but also 1 bonus optional day of studio time to finish off your work. Only 3 workshops scheduled for 2012. Course fees include gourmet catering and all mosaic materials (adhesives, timber panel, glass, ceramic and stone). For the first time there is an optional (untutored) extra FREE studio access day to finish work. Book for 2 people and take 10% off the first person's fee.

TOTAL BEGINNERS

This course is a repeat of the Total Beginners course conducted in May 2012. It is running again due to high demand.

Learn how to make mosaics using the traditional Roman cutting and laying principles. Gain some experience using traditional tools such as the hammer and hardie as well as more modern hand tools. Learn about andamento (the direction in which the tesserae are laid) and how to make directional laying emphasize your design. Explore cutting methods for sheet glass, smalti, vitrified glass, un-glazed and glazed ceramic and different types of stone and cover some basic adhesive technique. Helen will supply materials and a small range of objects and simple designs to choose a subject from, for your first 'working from life' mosaic. Just bring yourself.

FREE Open Studio Access: 9.30 am - 4 pm Monday Agust 6 (un-tutored, byo catering)

THE BODY

Starting with a 2 hour life-drawing class (with life model) tutored by Craig Macdonald (winner of The 2010 Montalto Sculpture Prize), we will explore either a physical gesture or an anatomical detail for development into a mosaic over the weekend. This workshop is highly recommended for everyone including complete beginners, experienced artists and especially suitable for all those self proclaimed "completely talentless people who can't draw"! Embrace the erotic or the gestural (or just the wrinkles).

Workshop: 9.30 am - 4 pm Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 October 2012 (fully tutored and catered)

FREE Open Studio Access: 9.30 am - 4 pm Monday 29 October 2012 (un-tutored, byo catering)

THE UNSWEPT FLOOR

The Unswept Floor (Asaraton) is a genre of trompe l'oeil mosaic initiated by the 2nd century Greek Mosaicist Sosos. Helen will have a range of prepared items suitable for representation as small, still life "unswept floor" mosaic features, rendered in the style of Pompeii's famous "Unswept Floor". Using a roman laying-style, take home your own little piece of 'The Unswept Floor'.

Workshop: Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 November 2012 (fully tutored and catered)

Open Studio Access: Monday 12 November 2012 (un-tutored, byo catering)
